Constitution and accounts of Dedham Parish Nurse Association. (1915-31)
Pre dating the NHS, the association provided a nurse for Parishioners of Dedham. Funded by private subscription from members ranging from two (labourers) to five (farmers) shillings a year and for Parishioners who weren’t members by a price per visit ranging from one penny to sixpence.
The detailed accounts for 1914/5 list Subscribers, Fees, Donations and Grants (total £104) and expenses (total £88/4s) including nurse’s salary (£57/4s), cycle repairs (5s) Chemist (16/7d).
Accounts 1915 to 1931 detail costs of housing, furniture, new bicycle – it is worth noting these records cover first world war years, even detailing the nurse’s war bonus of £8 in 1917 (14%) – I wonder what she was faced with during the war years
The Accounts show the names and amounts the great and good Parishioners who provided funds to support the Associations expenses ranging from £1 to £10, a very public demonstration of their generosity!
Nurse Ferdinand must have been the custodian of much sensitive and confidential information and – script writers take note.
